Hi Bloggers
Just thought I would share as much as I can with you for now.
I am still not getting used to Grandad not being around and on a personal level miss him so much.
What knowledge have I gained over last few months.
Funerals cost a fortune and a reasonable respectable send off can cost from £3700.00 upwards.
Solicitors and Probate companies will charge the earth at a time when you are grieving in my case a company recommended by the bank wanted in excess of £6000.00, This did not include any 3rd party costs like court paperwork or court applications which if agreed would give the company a green light to charge whatever disbursement they wanted.
Here is one example of many in the small print the company would contact any 3rd party either family or utilities company etc at £100.00 each
Old Whole life insurance policies may not be as high as you would expect for example in my case, my grandfarther set up a policy in approximately 1946 the payout on this policy was a whopping £214.00.
If you make proper provision and pay in a sufficient premium then it is possible to get a sufficient payment from these penny policies to cover a funeral.
The process of arranging a funeral is daunting however the undertaker was very helpful and attentive to every detail that was requested.
when people talk through there funeral wishes for when they die they make requests that unfortunately can not always be honored.
In my case I was made to promise that certain persons had a position in the funeral cortege.
You can never promise these things you cannot force someone into a funeral car lol, sorry grandad.
All in all his send of was befitting for a man of honesty and integrity there was a packed service and a very full bungalow of direct family and distant relatives including most if not all of the neighbors.
They quickly finished of five trays of beef and ham sandwiches porkpies crisps salad and tea loaf and all the biscuits.
I have just found the exhaustive list above funny it is just the sort of random comment grandad would have wrote
A collection was carried out for Marie Currie Cancer Care and The Douglas McMillan hospice which raised nearly £200.00, He would have been so pleased.
When it comes to handling a Probate Process yourself this can be very daunting.
Please do not use my comments as a legal guide to probate
You have to accept that you yourself are fully liable to ensure the safety of assets and monies and there are a whole raft of legal requirements to follow.
These include Gaining values of policies and bank accounts savings etc
Value of properties and or land.
Holding money from the estate safe.
Rule 1: do not hold this money, Set up an Executor Account with your bank and all monies entitled to the deceased must go into this account, your bank will be willing to help and advise, you will not be able to remove any money from this account until after probate has been granted.
However the bank upon provision of the Funeral invoice will issue a counter cheque for this item only.
All is going well however as the executor you have to ensure that monies are accurate and this can sometimes require backtracking of any other party who may have had control of these funds.
It is also necessary that if any damages are due to the deceased or litigation pending then these also need to be followed up to a full and proper conclusion so that these also are added to the estate value.
I can tell you this is very straight forward, On an average estate under £350.000
The probate court will require the IHT500 and application also the Death Certificate and Will and fee.
The probate office will contact the HMRC and the Department for work and Pensions.
Many departments will send you paperwork just take your time read the advice sheets these are explanatory.
If you have questions just ask the relevant department.
The only matters now that are causing excessive delay in this process and nuisance are my good old county council who as usual are lacking transparency and accountability,This is nothing new to me.
Due to the most recent findings and apologies for the treatment of grandad and myself I removed the blog entries in December, these have been temporary stored due to current activities in this matter .
However some of the entries will be re-posted over the coming days
Talks are ongoing with the local NHS trust at board level who have had the decency to look into the care and finances and I hope to have an outcome for you readers very soon.
