On my way home after a 5 day stay in hospital. Due to incompetency I find myself needing to return on Monday for a further 5 days. However, it has been an interesting week in may ways. Poor communication between staff and different departments, patients having to keep their own medication records, patients having to monitor their own care and when asking nurses questions being told to go and find out themselves, domestics standing around gossiping or on their personal mobile phones when they were supposed to be working and even holding a conversation with one patient on my ward whilst texting, blood pressure machines not working correctly and patients being given ill-explained or incorrect information, medication trolley in corridor left unattended, unlocked with lid open, being hurried into meals at the first available moment (often 30 minutes before meal times) in an attempt to get you in and out, some mornings woken for breakfast and other times not with no one monitoring who had received breakfast and who had not. Someone elderly and confused may wake and not remember they have not eaten or drunk anything which alarmed me. I could not help during this stay to compare so many similarities between this NHS hospital and care homes. We have stood up united this week and spoken out, challenging the below average care in the hope it will make changes for others not so 'alert'. Myself and others encountered the same defensive attitudes from staff which made our stay extremely stressful and frustrating. One of the main focuses on the care received here is to concentrate on the therapies given and have no stress - Mmmm, objective not achieved. Can't say any of us are looking forward to another 5 days there next week and anticipate a frosty reception! If only more people would challenge we may stand a chance in numbers, as we have said so many, many times before. Jenny
